Sushi on Jones

Bowery / Greenwich

12-course | $58 | 6-seat / 10-seat

Sushi on Jones was our first ever experience with lightning-quick omakase, and boy are we hooked. While Chicago has a handful of competitive omakase bars, where we are seriously lacking is on this trendy, affordable, and delicious 30-minute omakase movement.

As the first al fresco omakase bar, Sushi on Jones offers a one-of-a-kind experience, eating gourmet sushi at an outdoor tiki bar in the heart of New York’s Bowery District. Reservations are offered in 30-minute increments, making this the perfect spot for a quick, yet satisfying meal. Diners are seated around the small, beach-like tiki bar, and asked to select which omakase course they are electing, either the 12 ($58), 16 ($85), or 20 ($105) course. Once your selection is made, the chef quickly begins cutting and presenting each nigiri. You can expect to see tasty bites such as Arctic Char, tuna, Hamachi, king salmon, ika, ikura, hotate, uni, and wagyu. The sushi, while prepared and served outdoors, is carefully stored indoors prior to your seating. Fish from Sushi on Jones is consistently delicious, fresh, and full of flavor. With some minor sauce and searing here and there, Sushi on Jones takes a very minimalist approach to nigiri.

While New York City has a handful of similar sushi concepts, Sushi on Jones’ key differentiator comes down to both the fish quality and distinct outdoor vibe. Whenever we are in town, Sushi on Jones is our first reservation we book.

Sushi on Jones Omakase at a Glance

Rice: Decent rice temperature and flavor.

Fish: Best quality of fish of any 30-minute omakase we have experienced in New York.

Vibe: This place screams summer, and we aren’t mad. The outdoor tiki bar provides a fun, beach like atmosphere.

Experience: Close experience with the ability to converse with your chef, should you initiate a conversation.

Value: While the most expensive 30-minute omakase, of the three we have tried, we find the quality just a notch above the rest. We think the extra $8 is worth it.
